Strong players see the board even when they aren't looking at it. Blindfold training builds that ability deliberately. The pieces are hidden; you make moves by reading and playing notation, holding the position in your head as it evolves.
Start with short games of just a few moves and gradually extend the depth as your visualisation improves. The skill carries directly into your over-the-board play: deeper calculation, fewer one-move blunders, and a far better sense of where your pieces are during long combinations.
