Advanced Checkmates

Intermediate Advanced Checkmates · Checkmate Patterns · 5 positions

Master 18 coordinated checkmate patterns using every piece combination. From rook sacrifices and knight forks to queen-bishop diagonals and triple-piece assaults.

Endgame mastery is what separates players who convert winning positions from those who let them slip. Many games are decided not in the opening or middlegame, but in the final phase when accurate technique is required. This course focuses on checkmate patterns, one of the most important endgame skills to develop. Suitable for players rated 800–1600.

Each position is interactive: find the correct move to advance through the lesson. The AI explains the key concept behind each move, helping you understand the underlying endgame principles rather than simply memorising sequences. Over time, these principles become instinctive.

Endgame Positions (5)

  • Knight-Rook Coordination — Deliver checkmate using a knight check and rook coordination
  • Double Rook Sacrifice — Sacrifice both rooks to deliver checkmate on the h-file
  • Knight-Rook Back Rank — Use the knight check to set up a back rank mate
  • Bishop Diagonal Mate — Use the knight check to set up a devastating bishop checkmate
  • Double Rook Battery — Use the double rook battery to break through on the h-file and win Black's queen

Why Endgame Study Matters

Most chess players focus heavily on openings and neglect the endgame. This is a mistake. According to studies of amateur games, a large proportion of decisive results come from endgame errors — players reaching a theoretically won position and failing to convert it. Investing time in endgame technique pays dividends across your entire game.

The positions in this course are chosen to illustrate fundamental concepts that recur in practical play. Once you have internalised these patterns, you will recognise similar structures in your own games and know exactly how to proceed — whether you are trying to win or defending a difficult position.

Work through all 5 positions carefully, paying attention to the AI explanations. Then revisit the positions after a few days to reinforce your learning. Endgame knowledge that is truly remembered is knowledge that will save and win you games.
